What is a UTM link?
A UTM link is a normal web address with a few extra tags on the end, called UTM parameters. Analytics tools like Google Analytics 4 read those tags and show you exactly where each visitor came from: which channel, which campaign, even which button they clicked. Without them, most of your traffic just shows up as "direct" or "referral" and you lose the story behind your clicks.
How to use this UTM builder
- Paste the full web address you want to promote into Website URL.
- Fill in source, medium and campaign. These three are what most analytics tools expect.
- Add term and content only if you need them (paid keywords or A/B tests).
- Copy the finished link and use it in your email, ad, social post or bio.
The link is built live in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent to a server.
The five UTM parameters
- utm_source (required): the specific place the traffic comes from, such as
google, newsletterorlinkedin. - utm_medium (required): the type of channel, such as
cpc, email, socialorreferral. - utm_campaign (required): the campaign this link belongs to, such as
spring_saleorlaunch_2025. - utm_term (optional): the paid keyword you are bidding on, mostly for search ads.
- utm_content (optional): tells near-identical links apart, for example the
header_linkversus thefooter_linkin the same email.
Tips for clean campaign tracking
- Keep everything lowercase. UTM tags are case-sensitive, so
Emailandemailbecome two separate rows in your reports. This tool can force lowercase for you. - Never use spaces. Use underscores or hyphens instead, like
black_friday. - Pick one naming convention and write it down.
emailtoday andnewslettertomorrow will split one channel into two. - Only tag links you control. There is no need to add UTM tags to internal links between pages on your own site.
Is my data private?
Yes. This builder runs 100% in your browser. Your URLs and campaign names are never uploaded, stored or logged, so you can safely build links for unreleased products and private campaigns.
Frequently asked questions
What is a UTM parameter?
A UTM parameter is a small tag added to the end of a URL that tells analytics tools where a visitor came from. The five standard tags are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content.
Which UTM tags do I actually need?
Source, medium and campaign cover almost every case and are what analytics tools expect. Term and content are optional and mostly used for paid search keywords and A/B testing.
Do UTM links work with Google Analytics 4?
Yes. GA4 reads the standard utm_ parameters automatically and shows them under traffic acquisition, so you can see which source, medium and campaign drove each session.
Do UTM tags change or break my page?
No. UTM tags are just extra query parameters on the URL. Your page loads exactly the same way, and analytics tools simply read the tags in the background.
Should UTM tags be uppercase or lowercase?
Use lowercase. UTM values are case-sensitive, so Email and email are counted as two different channels. This builder can force everything to lowercase to keep your reports clean.
Is this UTM builder free and private?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. Your links and campaign names are never sent to a server or stored anywhere.
